Rethinking Moldova – a partnership that deserves support

The World Bank and the European Commission are co-hosting a Consultative Group Meeting: Moldova Partnership Forum on 24 March 2010, in Brussels.

It will be attended by Moldovan Prime-Minister Vlad Filat and high-level members of the Moldovan Government and takes place amid a severe economic crisis which carries the risk of reversing earlier gains in poverty reduction.

The purpose of the conference is twofold:

  • To reach a common understanding of the challenges facing Moldova in light of the economic crisis and the Government’s strategy for addressing them; and

To ensure coordination and mobilization of external assistance to support Moldova in overcoming the severe effects of the current crisis.

Despite the challenges of the day, Moldova’s Government is now more than ever committed to change. Aware of the vulnerabilities of the existing remittance-based, consumption-led growth model, it is looking to align the country on a sustainable and investment-driven development path. To this end the Government has formulated a strategic paper – Rethink Moldova – which outlines reform priorities and investment needs over a four year period.
